SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS: THE PEOPLE WHO LEAD THE WAY FORWARD

Change is good – and our country’s entrepreneurs embrace it. They are the people who look at things differently, and provide innovative solutions to everyday problems.

The social and financial benefits of their achievements are immeasurable, not only to themselves but to their communities and country as well.

That’s why we invest heavily in the success of social entrepreneurs whose businesses are built solely on the prospect of solving social problems in South Africa – and we don’t just help them get started. Having already identified them as budding business people, we form long-term partnerships. From investing R10 million over the next two years , to providing mentorships and networks, as well as training and development, we support social entrepreneurs every step of the way.

SORGHUM FARMERS: A CORNERSTONE OF THE LIQUOR INDUSTRY

It all starts with sorghum – and smaller sorghum farmers already make a significant contribution. That’s why we help them develop and watch them succeed.

Our bold ambition is to take traditional harvests provided by white farmers and increasingly supplement them with black farmers’ harvests in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces.

The DIAGEO Empowerment Trust SA has identified sorghum farmers in the Eastern Cape, and will invest R70 million in sorghum farming initiatives over the next five years. We will provide venture capital, equipment, training and mentorships. These initiatives will help the farmers increase their sorghum yield, grow their businesses, and access new markets, such as the lucrative East African market.

Their own hard work and ingenuity will be the foundation of greater success.

We aim at increasing the annual supply of sorghum and other ancillary grain by smaller black farmers by a minimum of 2 400 tons over five years. Once established, these farmers can become key members of the DIAGEO supply chain.
